Kievskaya Ploshchad completes the modernization of the Shchelkovsky bus station

9 October 2019 г.

Work has begun on the last touches of renovation to the Shchelkovsky bus station, also known as the Central Bus Station or the Moscow Bus Station, in a unique architectural project being carried out by Kievskaya Ploshchad. The complex is being revamped to become one of the best modern transportation hubs in Europe and will combine both a bus station and a shopping/entertainment center under one roof. Some 100,000 people a day are expected to go through the doors of the station.

The new Shchelkovsky complex will cover an area of some 150,000 square meters. Besides for the bus station itself, it will have retail, entertainment, and leisure areas as well as cafes and restaurants. This will make it a great attraction in particular for the residents of the Eastern District.

The new building has 11 floors with six above ground and five underground. The area for buses will be on the first and sixth floors with four elevators taking travelers throughout the building.

The renovation work will make the bus station five times larger than its previous size and will handle double the traffic, expanding volume from 15,000 to 30,000 passengers per day. The renewed Central Bus Station will be able to serve more than 1,500 intercity, interregional, and international destinations daily. The location of the station will also significantly improve the traffic situation in the area.

Schelkovskiy will also contain new facilities, such as a visa center and information terminals, a mother and child’s room, a children's entertainment center, a fitness club with a swimming pool, a movie theater, and a lounge for drivers.

The bus station has a unique ship-like shape, made out of glass and metal. Its translucent facade with wave-like geometry is lined with corrugated aluminum panels and decorated with nine-meter clocks, which will become the hallmark of the complex and the entire area.

Another unique feature of the new bus station is the platforms that have been built on the roof This was made possible due to an architectural decision by the Kievskaya Ploshchad Group of Companies, which employed the renowned Global Architecture Development firm to get the job done. The roof, which is 32 meters high, will have special ramps that can accommodate double-decker buses.

This project, which began in April 2017, is one of the most socially significant projects of the Kievskaya Ploschad Group of Companies. The building is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2020.

God Nisanov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kievskaya Ploshchad Group of Companies, remarked:

“Moscow is one of the fastest growing metropolises in the world. For many years, Kievskaya Ploshchad has been working on projects that contribute Moscow's developmental strategy and the attempt to make it a modern and comfortable space. I am glad that we are completing the implementation of another important city project - a new, modern, world-class bus station will appear in the capital.”
